“Monumental (Anti)Racism: Freedom and Public Memory”

Discussant: Ila Sheren, Art History, Sam Fox School

Abstract: This talk considers public monuments, memorials, and other prominent markings of the commemorative landscape as sites of racialied violence, and contestation of public memory around such sites as freedom struggles. Several working case studies ground this initial analysis of, and conditional argument for, monumental antiracism.
