Dr. Zachary Bowersox, Lecturer in Political Science
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in and, apart from a few professional stints in other states, have always lived somewhere in Missouri.
Where did you complete your PhD and when did you come to WashU?
I completed my PhD in 2016 at the University of Missouri, with a concentration in international relations, and joined WashU in the summer of 2021.
What are you currently working on?
My current work is focused on the coercive tactics of human traffickers and is a continuation of a body of work that I am rather proud of.
What is your favorite class to teach and why?
Relatedly, my favorite classes to teach are my Human Trafficking and Migration topics courses. They certainly tie into my broader research interests, and students always respond well to the materials and discussions.
What is your favorite thing about WashU?
My favorite thing about WashU, as someone who has lived in St. Louis, is its relationship with the city. It is a physical part of the city as well as a source of pride. St. Louisans, alumni or no, understand the school’s accomplishments and how that reflects on the city. There are so many spots on campus synonymous with St. Louis’s history or landscape, like Francis Field or Brookings Hall.
Favorite travel destination and why?
My favorite travel destination is synonymous with the place I think I would most like to live in the world. Edinburgh, Scotland I find to be a great old city, not too big or intimidating.
