How do politics shape a country's economic growth? In this course we examine the role of the state in economic development-both historically and in the developing world today. Using cross-country and subnational comparisons, we investigate which political institutions facilitate economic growth, which impede it, and which groups benefit as a result. We also consider how international influences, from colonialism to trade and foreign aid, affect the role of the government in development.
