POLITICAL SCIENCE 475

International borders are what make relations among states international, as they de- lineate what territory belongs to whom. Moreover, the status and key characteristics of borders are known to have significant effects on outcomes central to international rela- tions. For instance, whether their mutual border is disputed or not has profound influence over whether two states will enjoy cooperative or conflictual relations. Accordingly, territorial conflicts are widely known to be among the most contentious and difficult to resolve in international politics, and conflict over territory is one of the most prominent causes of interstate and intrastate violence. This course explores research on borders and their effects on political and economic outcomes, with a focuson work that unpacks previously under-explored dynamics in how borders affect behavior. We explore the role that borders and territory plays in a wide variety of contexts in international relations.
